New Year Begins with Snow

It's Snowing

Because we live in an area where snow is not a regular occurrence, we can happily welcome an unexpected storm that dumps way more snow than projected. We were all rather excited even if it did create a few issues as we weren’t prepared for that much wet snow and single digit temps.

While both D and I grew up with snowy, cold winters, Munchkin hasn’t had a lot of snow to play in over the years. Our duty stations have been in places that get little to no snow each winter. Of course, the previous 5 winters have found us in the dessert, so the winters tend to be fairly mild.

Snow Storm

While we didn’t have a white Christmas, we certainly had a white new year celebration. Only a few inches of snow were projected, but we ended up with a lot of snow that came down over a 2 day period. At first, the horses didn’t mind, but eventually, we moved them over to the comfort of our neighbor’s barn when Dixie showed signs of being too cold. It didn’t really phase Phantom.

Snow Storm Starting to Clear

Our neighbors here blessed us with a bunch of chopped wood for Christmas that they sent with us to the homestead. Boy were we grateful for that thoughtful gift as we didn’t have nearly enough wood chopped from the time that we were there at the end of the summer. It helped keep the cabin comfortable even when the temps dipped into the single digits. (I have a feeling that it was below zero with the windchill factor, but we tried not to think of that. lol!)

Relaxing by the Fire

This crazy snowstorm helped us to realize some areas where we need to focus for when we’re living on our homestead full time. We’ll need a lot more wood as well as a solid, enclosed shelter available for the animals in the winter. There were a few other areas were we are lacking, but it’s good that we have the opportunity to learn prior to actually needing these things full time. We’re also oh so thankful that we’ve been blessed with wonderful neighbors both here and at the homestead.
