My Thoughts:
While I know that it’s already a week after the traditional beginning of Advent, I didn’t have internet to share my thoughts on this resource. I know that some people get started a bit late on their Advent journey, so I still wanted to share. It doesn’t matter if we get it all done. The point of these lessons is to prepare our hearts and minds, to shift our focus from the craziness of the holidays to the reason for the season – Christ. I love that Amy points out right at the beginning of the book that we need to pick and choose what works for our family and not try to do it all.
Amy has put together a wonderful resource for Advent that can easily be personalized for each family. The resource list is a huge plus for those who want to add in a few extras other than just the daily devotional time. She even includes copywork pages for those who want to use them in their home.
Each day has a scripture passage and short devotional. It includes a Bible study for moms and/or older kids to help them dig a little deeper into the devotion of the day. These Bible study questions are meant to be used to prepare hearts (and minds as understanding is important when sharing scripture with our children) for the upcoming devotion. I found that these study questions also helped me to pull away from the distractions around me and focus more on the topic which I truly appreciated. Your family may also find these questions to be great discussion questions if you have older kids.
Also included in the daily devotions, is a schedule of events for the devotional family time including lighting the Advent candles, praying together, reading the scripture together, singing or listening to a suggested song, and an activity. Each day has a different suggested song as well as activity. Some days include things like a recipe for a special treat. (Mondays are snack days.) A recipe section is included at the back of the book which includes blank recipe cards for adding your own favorite recipes.
If you’re like me, you will appreciate the master supply list at the beginning of the book which has a day-by-day list of supplies needed for the suggested crafts/activities. If you aren’t a crafty person, you don’t need to do the crafts, but I think you’ll find that most, if not all, crafts are easy to do and require minimal supplies.
This Advent Adventure is geared more towards families with younger kids, but as a mom of a teenager, I can say that it works well for families with kids of all ages.
