Review: Typecrush Word Game

Typecrush

About Typecrush:

Typecrush is a word game that can be as simple or complicated as you want to make it. Really, there is only one rule: whoever solves the word first gets to pick the next word to be solved. It’s geared towards ages 7 and up, but younger kids could play with help or in a team situation.

If you’ve every played hangman, you’ll understand the basic premise behind this game. One person picks a word (as simple or hard as they wish). They find the letters needed to make the word and flip over the color-coded circles, so noone else can see the letters/word. The colors show how frequently that particular letter shows up which allows other participants to use deductive reasoning to help solve the word puzzle. Everyone then tries to guess the letters/word. The first person to solve the word puzzle gets to make pick the next word.

The beauty in this type of game set-up is that you can make up more rules to make it harder or easier based upon who is playing the game.

Typecrush is available for direct purchase for $25. That price includes free shipping. The game has a 100% satisfaction guarantee, so if you don’t like the game for whatever reason, you can send it back for a full refund.

Our Thoughts:

I really like the packaging for this game. It’s a simple, sturdy cardboard container with a screw-off top. The game itself is handcrafted in the US and made from recycled materials. The letters are beautiful, color-coded cardboard discs. The frequency charts (for help in solving the word puzzles) fit easily in the container with the letter discs. In addition to the printed, detailed instructions and frequency charts included in the container, the easy instructions are also printed directly on the container as is the frequency chart.

For me, I really appreciate when all parts of a game are self-contained, and that the instructions are on the container itself as instructions tend to get lost around here. The small packaging means it’s easy to throw in a bag or purse to take on the go. I immediately thought this would be nice for those situations where you know you’re going to be sitting and waiting for extended periods of time.

Typecrush is one of those games that is easy to play, but it has endless possibilities for game play. The concept is simple which means you can quickly pick it up and play. You can play with as few as two people if you play it in a hangman type of style. You can also play it with a large group of people which makes the game very versatile. The frequency charts make it easier to find the letters when you are setting up your word, and they also give you hints as to what the letters may be in the other person’s word choice. Whether you play with themes, play for points, or just play for fun, this game is sure to be a hit with young and old.
