Embracing the Local Markets

It’s hard to believe that we’ve been here for almost 2 weeks now. I admit that I was feeling rather frustrated at the lack of organic produce available in the area until a kind Walmart employee pointed me in the direction of a local produce market. I headed over there on Thursday afternoon and was pleasantly surprised. The place didn’t look like much from the outside, but the produce was beautiful. While many things were not certified organic, they were all raised in an organic/clean/pesticide-free manner. As I walked around looking at everything, I was treated to some delicious samples of fruit as well as some lovely pea sprouts.

Yes, I was feeling a bit giddy about the fact that I would now have access to this produce on a regular basis. I was thrilled that I would be supporting local farmers. I went home with a variety of produce to try out, and I was not disappointed by any of it. In fact, the quality was so good that we ended up going back today and picking up a few more things since we were already out that way. We were, once again, treated to some samples of scrumptious watermelon. (We ended up bringing home a watermelon. lol!) We also had the opportunity to meet the owner and learn more about their business.

I love purchasing from local farmers and ranchers whenever possible. I had previously purchased grassfed beef from a local rancher while we were up at the cabin, and now I have a source for healthy, local produce. I am a happy camper! Now, I just need to find a place for chicken and a couple of other things, and we’ll be all set. I may need to check out the local farmer’s market tomorrow as it could lead me to more information about the few sources we still need. 😉
