Review & Giveaway: Carlito C. Caterpillar’s Math House Games

Math House Games

Carlito C. Caterpillar’s Math House Games is a set of large, durable activity cards on an o-ring for easy of use.  The card set features 20 steps to help kids learn math in a fun, hands-on way.  While these cards are labeled as math games, they are actually math activities.  There are 2 activities for each step of the program.  The steps are broken down into 3 different stages which get progressively more difficult.  It’s an immersion program, so kids learn by physically doing the math concepts being presented.

All of the activities can be done with things from around the house.  The manipulatives shown in the picture above can be downloaded for free from their website or you can purchase a full, already made set.  In addition, parents can print out personalized certificates of excellence for each stage in the program.  The website also features helpful math teaching tips and hints for parents.  For kids, the website features free music downloads as well as the Carlito C. Caterpillar Hall of Fame.

Some of the concepts covered include:

  • Sets
  • Comparing (more, less, equal)
  • Numbers 1-10
  • Number order
  • More, Less
  • Measurements
  • Skip Counting
  • Place Value
  • Addition
  • Subtraction
  • Multiplication
  • Division
  • and more…

The cards are easy to use and the activities are clearly presented.  While Munchkin is past these concepts, I do think these will be great for my nieces which is why I took the time to print out the manipulatives and laminate them for durability.  I think hands-on activities are a wonderful way to learn various math skills and concepts.

  5. One of our favorite activities is playing “store” with (gasp!) REAL COINS!!! I don’t know how many times I’ve purchased the same toys, and every time at different prices, and I always pay with the wrong amount, so my poor children have to make change in sooo many different ways!

    • Ha! Love that! My daughter would love to play store for hours when she was younger. As she got older, she switched to wanting to play restaurant. 😉

  6. Lately the favorite game is one my daughter made up. We have some dice with larger numbers of dots on them (7-12), and a little can of clear pebbles. She and the little boys roll the dice and add them together, or subtract them from each other, or choose the largest/smallest value, etc… and get that many pebbles.
It’s such a simple game with tons of variations, but they love to play and see who ends up with the most pebbles!
I don’t know that they even realize it is math!
