Adventure Stories for Boys and Girls

Amy Puetz Adventure series

I was given the privilege of reviewing the e-book format of two of Amy Puetz’s latest books – adventure series for boys and girls.  Ten Great Adventures and Ten Girls from History are collections of 10 short stories geared towards boys and girls.  The stories, originally written by Kate Dickinson Sweetser, have been nicely edited by Amy.  The books are available in both print and e-book format.  The print books are normally $25, but from May 2-6, you can save $10 when you use the code May2011.

Ten Great AdventuresTen Great Adventures features fictional stories about historical characters such as Sir Francis Drake, David Livingstone, Captain John Smith, Christopher Columbus, Daniel Boone, Sir John Franklin, Hernán Cortes, John Paul Jones, Hernando De Soto, and Giuseppe Garibaldi. The book has a glossary which is helpful for some of the lesser known terms as well as a maps to go along with the stories.  While this series is geared towards boys due to the action and adventure, I’m sure there will be quite a few young ladies who will also enjoy the stories.Ten Girls from History

Ten Girls from History features dramatizations about ladies from the past including Louisa May Alcott, Clara Barton, Molly Pitcher, Cofachiqui, Madeleine De Vercheres, Dorothy Quincy, Ida Lewis, Elizabeth Van Lew, Virginia Reed, and Clara Morris. A glossary is included at the end of the book as well as key historical facts for each of the characters.  Obviously, this series is meant to inspire girls, but I believe that boys would also enjoy many of these entertaining stories.

Once again, Amy Puetz has found some great living history stories to capture the attention of readers young and old.  She is gifted when it comes to making history come alive.  I found myself enjoying the stories just as much as Munchkin. Munchkin’s only comment is that she would like a few more pictures.  (Both books have a few lovely pictures.)

These books make great read aloud stories for the entire family.  It’s always nice to be able to learn a little history while reading wholesome, entertaining stories.  Whether you’re a homeschooler who would like to supplement your history curriculum with living books or you’re just looking for some wholesome stories for your lasses and ladies, these two books are sure to fit the bill.

I received an e-book version of the above mentioned books for the purpose of writing a frank and honest review. A positive review in not guaranteed and all opinions are my own.
