When you go gluten free, there are certain foods that you miss. We miss being able to pick up those individually packaged goodies that come in a box. You know the ones that your mom may have packed in your school lunch? Some foods, I haven’t found a good replacement for yet. As much as I would like to make everything, it’s just not practical all of the time. I’m so grateful for companies who are striving to make gluten free products taste good.
Shabtai Gourmet produces their Gluten Free products in a dedicated gluten free facility. Their products are not only Gluten Free, but they’re also Lactose Free, Soy Free, Casein Free, Peanut Free, and Dairy Free. It’s a family run company that takes pride in creating delicious gluten free products. When I saw that they had swiss chocolate rolls and raspberry rolls, I was pretty excited.
When the package arrived, Munchkin dug in to see which goodies we received. To say she was excited about the Swiss Chocolate Roll would be an understatement. I was thrilled to see a Raspberry Roll in the box. We also received Meltaway Pecan Sandies and Chocolate Chip Cookies. The only problem was that I had to convince someone that she needed to wait until Daddy got home. Not an easy task.
Once Daddy arrived home (and after we ate supper), I cut up a slice of both the Swiss Chocolate Roll and the Raspberry Roll. The cake was soft and easy to cut. It did not crumble as I cut into it. The chocolate on the Swiss Chocolate Roll fell off some when I cut into it, but that’s not something that is unique to a gluten free cake.
The Swiss Chocolate Roll was delicious. It reminded us of the swiss cake rolls of days gone by – you know, the days that were filled with gluten? The only complaint was that it needed a little more cream filling. Otherwise, it was great. Of all the things we received this was the favorite for both Munchkin and D. They gave it two thumbs up.
The Raspberry Roll was without a doubt my favorite. The yellow sponge cake paired with raspberry and rolled in coconut. Yum! It was moist, soft, and filled with flavor. While Munchkin and D both liked it, they allowed me to have the privilege to truly enjoy it. They claimed the Swiss Chocolate Roll. **grin** I’m not sure how they created these fabulous cakes without gluten and dairy. wow!
The Chocolate Chip Cookies looked different because the chocolate chips were actually on the outside of the cookie. They had a nice crisp texture, but we didn’t really care for the flavor. To be fair, we’re extremely picky when it comes to chocolate chip cookies, so it could be just us. Whatever the case, I plan on crushing the cookies and adding a little something to them to create a nice base for a pie. I think they’ll work wonderfully for that purpose.
The final product that we received to try was the Meltaway Pecan Sandies. I really like Pecan Sandies, so I was happy to see these in the box. The texture on these is more crisp and airy than the traditional Pecan Sandie. The flavor resembles a blend between a snickerdoodle and a pecan sandie. Munchkin and D felt they were okay, but not something that they would want to eat on a regular basis. I’m enjoying snacking on them here and there.
Without reservation, we can highly recommend both the Swiss Chocolate Roll and the Raspberry Roll. The Chocolate Chip Cookies and Meltaway Pecan Sandies received mixed reviews, so those will depend on your personal preferences. Shabtai Gourmet has a wide selection of baked goods. The products are Kosher Parve and perfect for Passover.
