Synonyms The Game

Synonyms, The word game that gets your mind racing!

I love to be able to use educational games in our homeschooling – especially when those games don’t require us to be super serious.  Enter in Synonyms – the board game.  The first thing that struck me about this game was how beautiful it was.  Everything was nicely contained in its own compartment in the box (love that!).  The 400+ color-coded cards were laminated and sturdy so they are sure to last for many, many games (and years) to come.

…my mommy brain truly needs to be exercised more!

From the first roll of the die, this game had Munchkin and I in stitches.  Why?  Well, it soon became evident that we really need to work on our vocabulary.  Due to this fact, we chose to do the “easier” version of the game.  In time, we’ll work up to the normal game as our vocabulary expands.  We helped each other with hints which lead to even more laughter.  We also chose not to time ourselves because, well, we were that bad.  Obviously, my mommy brain truly needs to be exercised more!

Let me back up a minute and explain what this game is all about….

Each player (or team) goes around the board and collects the letters of the word Synonym.  Sounds fairly simple, right?  Well, not so fast.  The player has to correctly give the designated number of synonyms (based on a roll of the die) for the word they are given.  There are 3 difficulty levels for the words, but the player doesn’t get to pick the level.  Nope, that is determined by the color of the space on which they landed.

…a mind-enhancing, lively vocabulary game.

The synonym (word) cards have the vocab word on the front of the card, and a listing of synonyms on the back of the card.  Not all synonyms will be listed, so the group gets to make the final decision on whether the given word is genuinely a synonym for the current word.  It can become rather crazy.  Add in challenge cards and some pass cards, and you have the makings for a mind-enhancing, lively vocabulary game.

Synonyms lends itself to a wide range of variations as well as different vocabulary capabilities.  It’s recommended for ages 10+.  With help and a bit of tweaking, younger students could play.  This game would not only be great for students, homeschoolers, and/or teachers, but also for an excellent party game.  It can be used for 2-8 players, but by playing in teams, it can be expanded to include more players.

We’ve had so much fun playing this game, and I recommend it without reservation.  Synonyms retails for $29.99, but I’m able to offer my readers a 10% discount.  You just need to order by email – make sure you mention my blog and the code MCN10.

I received a copy of Synonyms to help facilitate a frank and honest review. All opinions are my own.
