The Little Things in Life: Sewing Together

Posted in Family, and Homemaking

1st Sock MonkeysOn Thursday afternoon, Munchkin decided that she wanted to try to make a sock monkey.  She’s always adored sock monkeys and thought it would be fun to make her own.  We didn’t have the “right” socks for the job, but she didn’t really care.  We looked up the basic design for the sock monkey set off on our sock monkey adventure.  Slowly, the monkey started to take shape as we sat there talking, cutting, sewing, and stuffing.  We laughed as the monkey was a little too skinny and had crooked ears, but Munchkin was pleased with the results.  I just enjoyed that special time together.

Cloth Doll

After the sock monkey was finished, she decided that she wanted to make another doll.  On Wednesday, she and her friend had made little dolls, but she wasn’t pleased with the way that hers turned out.  She wanted to try a different basic pattern and start all over again.  We once again sat and talked and cut and sewed and stuffed.  The doll didn’t get finished yesterday as Daddy arrived home just as Munchkin finished stuffing her.  It will be fun to see the end result.

D says that I need to pull out Munchkin’s sewing machine so she can start sewing whenever she wants instead of relying on me to do some of the things.  (She also does hand-sewing.  She’s working on getting better at this skill.)  He is right, of course, but I guess I just enjoy the two of us working on our own parts of the project.  I do need to make sure that she is working on her skills, so I’ll end up getting the sewing machine out for her one of these days.

It’s the little things in life, like these afternoon sewing sessions, that I really enjoy with Munchkin.  I know that all too soon, she’ll be grown up.  I want to treasure these days, these special moments.

What types of little things do you treasure?

  1. That is cute! I like to do things like that. Baby girl is way to small, but my son likes making things. He is still to small to use the sewing machine though!

  3. That is so sweet. Those are the types of things I miss about not having a girl.

I enjoy late night talks with my sons. (What is it about late night that makes teens want to open up? lol)
