Friday was a bittersweet day for Munchkin filled with both highs and lows….
Friday morning found us heading over to a Bead for Life party that our homeschool group was holding. Bead for Life is an organization in Uganda that helps primarily impoverished woman to improve their lives. They use recycled paper to make beautiful handcrafted beads. These beads are made into necklaces, bracelets, and earrings. They are also sold in packets, so others can use their handiwork to create their own beautiful bead creations.
Our homeschool group did the curriculum that was available through Bead for Life. (Munchkin did not participate at this time. We plan on going through the curriculum at a later date.) The kids (and adults) learned about poverty in Uganda and all that it entails. In addition, they learned how to roll their own beads. The kids that participated in the class taught the other kids how to roll beads at the party.
There were many beautiful necklaces, bracelets, and earrings available for purchase. The prices are all very affordable, and it’s nice that your purchase helps others in need. Munchkin asked if she could purchase a bracelet for her friend that was moving. Her friend was very excited that Munchkin did this for her.
Which leads us to the next part of our day….
One of the difficult parts of being military is saying goodbye to the friends that we make at each location. One of Munchkin’s friends moved on Friday afternoon. The girls played right up into it was time for everyone to say goodbye. There were tears shed by the girls and lots of hugs exchanged. This goodbye was a little more difficult because this family is getting out of the Marine Corps, so we know that we won’t see them again unless we purposefully went to see them. Usually, there is a little hope that you may see the other family at another duty station.
A distraction was needed….
It’s always fun to see how something as simple as a garden sprinkler can change the mood around the house. It was a fun ending to an up and down day.
Beautiful beads & a beautiful way to help others!! I know all to well how Little Munchkin is feeling :/ my dad was Army 21 years and we were either on the move or someone was always moving away…poor sweetie! I am glad to see that she enjoyed part of the day, now with e-mail and all it will be easier for her to keep in touch! Give her a hug from me, God Bless 🙂
Beads for Life sounds like a great organization! It sounds similar to something we have at our church, Seeds of Hope. we support a church and community in Mozambique and we have a group of women that go over every and teach the women in this village how to make jewelry and sell in their villages. These women also sell the same jewelry around our community to raise money to support these villages in Mozambique. Very cool!
