Homeschooling for the Rest of Us
by Sonya Haskins
Book Description:
Homeschooling parents are under great pressure. Besides trying to balance teaching responsibilities and family life, they often face unrealistic expectations from relatives, churches, other homeschoolers, and society at large. Even parents considering homeschooling sense the need to be perfect. Sonya Haskins doesn’t want any more families to give up on homeschooling. In this book she shares affirming stories and practical ideas from dozens of everyday families who successfully deal with cluttered schedules, academic struggles, sibling squabbles, and other real-life issues. Instead of learning a one-size-fits-all approach, readers will discover how to evaluate their own family’s strengths and weaknesses and set their own goals for success.

About the Author:
For most of her childhood Sonya Haskins was raised in Soddy-Daisy, Tennessee and when she was 17 she moved to Bristol, Tennessee to attend King College. This is where Sonya met her husband and they wed in 1994. Their first child, Sarah, was born in 1996 and later they had Micah, Christopher, Daniel and Hannah. Sonya is grateful for the opportunity to teach her children at home and it amazes her how much she learns in the process as well. Homeschooling is a wonderful option for any family and Sonya loves sharing homeschool information with others.
My thoughts:
I think most, if not all, homeschoolers have those days where they wonder if they are really doing the right thing. They begin to wonder if they can really do this. They look at others and think that they must be the only one that doesn’t have it all together. The house is a mess. The kids are fighting. It’s time to eat and the cupboards are bare. A shower? Well, eventually that may happen…
If any of these things have ever happened to you, then you will probably enjoy this book. If you’re thinking about homeschooling but think that you can’t because… then, this might be the book for you.
I enjoyed the down to earth feel of this book. Sonya doesn’t talk down to the readers. While this book is primarily written towards newer homeschoolers (in my opinion), seasoned homeschoolers will benefit from some of the practical advice and funny stories. (It’s always nice to hear that other homeschoolers have “those days”.)
