Cherries in Winter
Cherries in Winter
My Family’s Recipe for Hope in Hard Times
by Suzan Colon

About the book:

Cherries in Winter celebrates the unexpected turns in life and the comfort that can be gained from food and family.  Like the women before her, Suzan found solace in her kitchen. “The recipes Nan wrote and saved offered more than directions for making the comfort food that sustained my family for four generations,” Suzan writes. “They’re artifacts from times both good and bad – not vague references, but proof that we’ve been through the worse than this and come out okay.”  As Suzan rediscovers her family’s history and the recession-age grit, determination, and strength that were her lineage, so will the readers of Cherries in Winter.

About the Author:

Suzan Colon is a contributing writer and editor for the O, The Oprah Magazine.  Her articles have appeared in Marie Claire, Harper’s Bazaar, Rolling Stone, Details, and other magazines.  She lives in New Jersey with her husband, Nathan.

My Thoughts:

Cherries in Winter is an interesting read about writer, Suzan Colon, as she loses her six figure income and begins to look into her Nana’s old recipe files.  While looking through her Nana’s recipe files, she finds much more than just great recipes.  She finds detailed information about her family’s history.  The book weaves recipes with tales from her own life and that of her family.  At times, the story line is quite blunt, so you will find swearing and taking the Lord’s name in vain in this book.  Some difficult topics are covered as she looks back through the generations.  I enjoyed the way the book jumped from story to story and generation to generation.  The scanned images of the old recipes pulled you in to the stories that followed the recipes.
