Mathletics Review

Posted in Homeschooling, and Reviews

Mathletics is an internet based math curriculum.  Before considering this program, you will need to make sure your computer meets the minimum requirements listed below.
System Requirements:
  • Windows XP/Vista or Mac OS 10.4 or above
  • 512 MB Ram
  • Screen Resolution of 1028 x 768
  • Broadband internet connection
  • Internet Explorer (7 or above) or Firefox (2 or above)
  • Adobe Flash Player (latest version preferred)
Mathletics offers curriculum for grades K-8 at this time.  The yearly subscription includes a teacher/parent account as well as a student account.  The parent/teacher can download additional worksheets/workbooks for use when the student is not able to be on the computer.  (As of the time of the writing of this review, I was having difficulty printing/downloading the workbooks/worksheets.)  Students have the option to use the program by themselves or use it in competition mode against other students online.
Munchkin enjoyed the instant feedback that she received on her work.  Each question was graded prior to her moving on to the next question.  At times, this would also frustrate her though as she wanted a perfect score each time.  In order to do this, she had to go back through the whole set of questions.

Another motivator for Munchkin was the point system and point board.  She enjoyed seeing how far up in the daily ratings she could get compared to other students here in the US and internationally.  She was also able to earn credits to buy things in the store.  They were able to buy different hair styles, accessories, and what not for their personalized characters.

As a parent/teacher, I was able to easily track Munchkin’s progress and receive reports on how she was doing.  I could see exactly where she needed more work.  In addition, I could assign certain “projects” for her that she had to complete before doing anything else.

The main downfall for this program for us would be difficulty of use when we’re on the go since it’s an online program.  Other than that factor, both Munchkin and I like this math program/curriculum.

A Mathletics subscription costs $59 per student per year.  If you know the Human Calculator’s favorite number (hint:  it’s ‘9’!) and you enter that when asked, you can purchase a single child subscription for $49.95 for a year.

I received a 45 day subscription to Mathletics to do this review.
No other compensation was received.  All opinions are my own.
