Redefining Beautiful: What God Sees When God Sees You
by Jenna Lucado and Max Lucado

Not feeling very beautiful? Learn what beauty is from God’s perspective.

Revolve speaker Jenna Lucado has teamed up with her dad, Max Lucado, to bring girls a fresh perspective on what they need to live a life of peace, joy, and confidence. What does God see when He looks at them? And how does a girl catch that vision?

Jenna reveals life accessories that are essential, and which single accessory is a real must-have to give teens a look they love—a look that says they are comfortable with who they are and secure and confident. What’s the all-important accessory? Love from a father. But what happens when there is no loving father in sight, no daddy to tell them they are beautiful?

Through conversational “girl time” Jenna reveals that when we look to God as our Father, He can change our focus, our look, and our lives. With affirmation from Max, Redefining Beautiful will change the way girls look at God, themselves, and the people around them.

Society has dictated to us their idea of beauty.  It’s all about outward appearances.  Do you have the right hair, skin, make-up, accessories?  Sadly, girls are buying into this idea of beauty at younger ages.  We are seeing elementary age kids with extremely low self esteem and eating disorders.  Once kids start down this dangerous path, it’s hard to turn back.  This young girls turn into grown woman with a host of issues that should have been addressed at a young age.

Jenna Lucado has taken on this tough subject in a down to earth manner that will help both the young and old.  Redefining Beau-ti-ful is geared towards girls in their teens, but it could easily be used with tweens (with parental involvement) or adults.

Just remember that God is the first and primary authority in your life who can tell you exactly who you are and where you are going.

Redefining beautiful reads like an interactive workbook with questions followed by journaling space.  It is meant to be slowly, purposefully read.  While the subject content is very serious, the book remains conversational in style.  The book is peppered with beauty tips, life accessories, and notes from Max (Jenna’s father).

In Redefining Beautiful, a strong emphasis is placed on the roll of both the earthly father and the Heavenly Father in a girl’s life.  Jenna stresses the importance of knowing the even if the earthly father fails, the Heavenly Father will always be there.

Just remember that God is the first and primary authority in your life who can tell you exactly who you are and where you are going.
Who does He say you are? His!
Where does He say you are going? Wherever He sends you. And girl, He’s got BIG plans for you (check out Jeremiah 29:11)!  (excerpt from Life Accessory in chapter 5)

Due to the sensitive nature of some of the material (boyfriends, physical relationships), this would be a book that Munchkin and I would read together during mother-daughter time.  Munchkin has admittedly already struggled some with self-esteem issues, so I could see her benefiting from the material covered in this book.  This book could lead to some thoughtful conversations.

About the authors:

Jenna Lucado has a passion for writing and speaking, just like her dad.  She currently speaks to more than 125,000 teen girls annually as part of the Revolve Tour, has narrated part of the audio Bible Word of Promise: Next Generation, and is driven by the thought of one more girl hearing about the love of Jesus.

Max Lucado, Minister of Writing and Preaching for the Oak Hills Church in San Antonio, Texas, is the husband of Denalyn and father of Jenna, Andrea, and Sara. On a good week her reads a good book, has a few dinners with his wife, and breaks 90 on the golf course. He usually settles for the first two.

Redefining Beau-ti-ful, published by Thomas Nelson, retails for $12.99.
