The Game

Posted in Thoughts

Saturday morning, Munchkin had her final basketball game of the season. The league were holding a mini tournament. If Munchkin’s team won their game, they would play in the finals. Her team went in as the underdogs against an undefeated team. No one expected them to win. They didn’t even expect the game to be close, but everyone was there to cheer them on.

The game began. Munchkin’s team came out with high energy and scored the first points of the game. This energized the team. As the game progressed, their confidence was building. The score went back and forth during the whole game. With seconds left in the game, Munchkin’s team was down by 2 points. Her teammate shoots the ball. We all watch as the ball goes up and swish! as the buzzer sounds. The crowd erupts in cheers. They tied the game!

We’re heading into overtime. One of the best players on Munchkin’s team goes down and has to be pulled out. The team rallies together. Everyone in the stands is cheering Munchkin’s team on. The kids continue to play hard; they’re putting everything they have into the game. The final buzzer sounds; the scoreboard shows only one point difference between the teams. With disappointment in their eyes, our kids slowly walk off the court. The crowd stands and applauds to encourage them.

Everyone agrees that it was the best game of the season. It was also the only tie game and overtime of the season. After the team received their congrats from pretty much everyone in the stands as well as the other players, they didn’t feel quite as bad about the loss. They played their best and almost defeated the best. It’s a game that won’t soon be forgotten.
