Make It From Scratch: Planter Boxes

Posted in Family, and Homemaking

As I stated in my Frugal Friday post, I decided to use the wood that I had removed from the closets while working on updating the closets to make planter boxes. This year, we decided that we wanted to try to use the square foot gardening method. Now, my boxes aren’t truly square foot boxes as I used “scrap” lumber to make them. I also haven’t put the dividers in yet to make them a real square foot garden, but they are basically divided up into square foot sections.

Here is the finished product. The two side boxes are tomato plants. In the long middle box, I have grapes on the ends (I plan on putting up a trellis for the vines to grow up), blueberries, blackberries, black raspberries, and red raspberries. This eventually will need to be thinned out, but for now, they’ll be ok. We put a border of maragolds in the planters as well.

I just made basic boxes by screwing together the four pieces. Since this was scrap lumber, I didn’t have to pay anything for it. I plan on making more boxes for other garden veggies as well. We planted some strawberries in different planters and placed those on the patio area. They’re not an amazing feet, but I think they turned out fairly well.

While we were out planting, we also added some assorted annuals to the planter boxes attached to the shed. Munchkin had a lot of fun helping with this.

I plan on having the planter boxes wrap the whole way around the shed and filling them with all kinds of veggies and herbs. We’ll see how things go this year. We haven’t had a lot of luck in the past due to too hot temps or flooding. But, we’re in a brand new location, and we’re trying something completely different!

So cute! I love the shed in and of itself, but the boxrs make it even more cozy and dollhouse like! You had a great idea to build your boxes. They are so expensive to buy! God bless you! Enjoy those herbs and veggies!

Love it. I did a smaller, but similar project this weekend too using a gate from an old deck to make a box for herbs. Great project!
