City on our Knees

by TobyMac

Song Lyrics

If you gotta start somewhere why not here
If you gotta start sometime why not now
If we gotta start somewhere I say here
If we gotta start sometime I say now

Through the fog there is hope in the distance
From cathedrals to third world missions
Love will fall to the earth like a crashing wave

Tonight’s the night
For the sinners and the saints
Two worlds collide in a beautiful display
It’s all up tonight

When we step across the line
We can sail across the sea
To a city with one king
A city on our knees
A city on our knees
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh

If you gotta start somewhere why not here
If you gotta start sometime why not now
If we gotta start somewhere I say here
If we gotta start sometime I say now

Through the fog there is hope in the distance
From cathedrals to third world missions
Love will fall to the earth like a crashing wave

Tonight’s the night
For the sinners and the saints
Two worlds collide in a beautiful display
It’s all love tonight

When we step across the line
We can sail across the sea
To a city with one king
A city on our knees
A city on our knees
Oh-oh-oh

Tonight could last forever
We are one choice from together
Tonight could last forever
Ooh
Tonight could last forever

We are one choice from together
As family
We’re family
Oh Tonight could last forever
We are one choice from together
You and me
Ya, you and me

Tonight’s the night
For the sinners and the saints
Two worlds collide
In a glorious display
Cuz its all love tonight

When we step across the line
We can sail across the sea
To a city with one king
A city on our knees
A city on our knees
Oh oh oh
A city on our knees
A city on our knees
Oh oh oh
If we gotta start somewhere why not here
If we gotta start sometime why not now

City on Our Knees BookThoughts about the book:

City on Our Knees (song) became a huge hit as I believe the lyrics resonated with many people.  Our society is extremely divided, and the idea of being able to come together toward one common goal is pleasing to most people no matter what their skin color, race, or place in society.

Toby Mac took the heart of City on Our Knees (song) and expanded upon it in his book, City on Our Knees.  He compiled a collection of inspirational stories.  These stories of hope and perseverance show readers that anyone can step outside of their comfort zone and make a difference.  We all need to be listening to the Lord’s leading in our lives.

There are four different sections in this book which contain inspirational stories that fit the following themes:

  • Step across the line
  • Out of the comfort zone… and into the light
  • We are family
  • Hope is just a prayer away

As Christians, we need to come together and serve the Lord completely.  Overall, I enjoyed reading this book even thought there were a few issues that I did not agree with theologically.  Because it’s a compilation of stories from various sources, not everything will fit with one specific set of beliefs.  Toby Mac did a wonderful job weaving the stories into the sections based upon his song, City on Our Knees.

I received a copy of this book from Bethany House Publishers to help facilitate the writing of frank and unbiased review. All opinions are my own.
