International Bow Hunter Education Class

Posted in Family, and Outdoor Adventures

Second Hunt 1

Munchkin’s weapon of choice is her bow. She very much enjoys archery and wants to be able to do some hunting with her bow in the future. This past week, Munchkin worked on getting the online portion of her bow hunting class completed so she would have her certificate in time for Sunday’s field day class.

Second Hunt 2

We chose to go with the online class instead of the Saturday in-person class due to the class site being 1 1/2 hours away. The online class consisted of lessons, interactive programs, quizzes, and a final exam. Once the student completed the online course, they received a certificate to take to the required field day portion of the class.

Second Hunt 3

EARLY Sunday morning, we made our way over to the course site. Munchkin was the only girl and the only teen at the class. The rest of the participants were adult men. The cool thing was that they were all impressed that she wanted to be there for this. The instructor was really great with her and made a point to keep her actively involved by asking questions.

Second Hunt 4

Once they went outside for the “second hunt” and tracking portion of the class, her face just lit up, and she jumped right into the exercise. In fact, before long, she was leading the entire group which lead to a few chuckles from the other instructor and some participants.

It turns out that often the girls and women are the ones that really jump into the practical exercises in many of the classes. When it comes time to the field dressing and other activities like that, the ladies have no issue with getting their hands dirty. I thought that was rather interesting.

Bowhunting Card Blanked Out

The course concluded with their final exam and then a lesson in map and compass use. Upon completion, she received her bow hunter card. Munchkin really enjoyed the class and is eager to improve her skills, so she can get out there hunting. She’s hoping to be able to go on a hunt with grandpa some day. 🙂

Up next for us? Hunter’s safety. She’s not going to be quite as gung-ho about this one as she’s not as big on hunting with guns. 😉
