Fear and the Military Life Part 2

Posted in Christian Life, and Military Life

If you know someone in the military (mother, father, son, daughter, husband, wife…), you know the fear that comes along with loving that military member.  You know that they could be called up to head off to war at any time.  When the happens, if you’re truly honest with yourself, you know there is the possibility of them not coming home.

The Lord is my light and my salvation; Whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the strength of my life; Of whom shall I be afraid?
~ Psalm 27:1 ~

I’m no different than any other military spouse.  When D is deployed, my worst fear is the knock on the door.  The one that would completely change my life forever.  The one that would shake me to my core.

Though an army may encamp against me, My heart shall not fear;
Though war may rise against me, In this I will be confident.
~ Psalm 27:3 ~

It wasn’t something that I chose to talk about when he was gone, but before he left we had to make all of the preparations ~ “just in case”.  It wasn’t something that I really wanted to dwell on, but that fear was always there in the back on my mind.  Every now and then, in the quiet darkness of night, it would creep into my thoughts.  My heart would start to race as the “what ifs” started to play out in my head.

Teach me Your Way, O Lord, And lead me in a smooth path, because of my enemies.
~ Psalm 27:11 ~

Lying there in bed alone, I would cry out in prayer to my Lord.  Only He had the strength and power to overcome these deep-seeded fears ~ the “what ifs” of being of military spouse whose husband had gone to war.  Prayers, verses, and hymns would be repeated over in my head until a peaceful sleep would take over my tired body.

Wait on the Lord;
Be of good courage,
And He shall strengthen your heart;
Wait, I say, on the Lord!
~ Psalm 27:14 ~
