Project Truck: Safety Gear

Posted in Family, In the Garage, and Reviews

I received some safety gear – FSL Patriot Electronic Earmuffs – free from the company to provide feedback on their use. While they are great for the shooting range, they are also perfect for use when working on the project truck. Every time we start to make real progress on Munchkin’s truck, we seem to have things happen that put it on hold or back in slow mode. After my injury, the progress slowed downed considerably. Once Munchkin and Daddy both started back up with school, well, progress was virtually non-existent. There isn’t a lot of time for large projects,…

Project Truck: Stripping Down Donor Truck

Posted in Family, and In the Garage

It’s hard to believe that it’s been so long since I’ve posted an update on Munchkin’s project truck, but life got in the way of being able to really work on the truck. When our property manager told us this week that we only had 30 days to get rid of the donor truck that we were parting out, we knew that we needed to really get some work done while Daddy had some time between classes. After D disconnected the cab of the donor truck, it was time for us to try to get it off the frame. We…

Munchkin’s Truck: Welding and Grinding

Posted in Family, and In the Garage

I realized that it’s been some time since I’ve updated the progress on Munchkin’s truck project. There is a reason for that… At this point, things are moving pretty slow as it takes a lot of time, patience, and work for this part of the project. They’re working on removing rust, patching (welding in new sheet metal), shaping the new pieces, grinding down the welds to make a smooth surface…. You get the idea. When you throw in the summer desert heat, well, things move even slower. Munchkin isn’t doing any welding, but she does help with the rust removal.…

Learning How to do an Oil Change

Posted in Family, and In the Garage

Daddy believes very strongly that Munchkin needs to know how to do regular vehicle maintenance. Today, he decided it was time for Munchkin to learn to do a complete oil change on her truck. It’s the first oil change since getting the truck. One thing that we’ve found since Munchkin purchased the project truck is that regular maintenance was obviously not a top priority for previous owners. Daddy plans on changing that fact as he wants Munchkin to learn how to take pride in maintaining her own vehicle. Part of that process is getting to know her vehicle by reading…

Project Maize & Blue: Tailgate Repair

Posted in Family, and In the Garage

One of the first things we did when Munchkin got her truck was to strip out the inside. It was a painstaking job, but it will be worth it in the end. Once everything was removed from the interior, Munchkin painted on the Dupli-Color bed armor. She chose to do this instead of redoing the carpet. She felt it would be more durable and easier to keep clean. Daddy has been teaching Munchkin some of the finer points of stripping off paint and grinding off rough spots as they prepared the tailgate for the primer and first coat of paint.…
