Starting Riding Training

Posted in Family, and Outdoor Adventures

Daddy decided that it was finally time to start riding the horses again. When we brought them home from the rescue, we made the decision to do training before riding them as they were disrespectful. Munchkin had some bad experiences with a few horses at the ranch, so she was hesitant to get back on her horse, Dixie, until she knew that she was respecting her. While training has taken longer due to our slow training schedule, they have made huge strides and are pretty good on the ground. We still have more work to do, but Daddy felt they…

Working with the Horses

Posted in Family

Munchkin has really stepped up recently and started not only training her horse, Dixie, but also working with Phantom when Daddy or I can’t work with him. She’s always been great with Dixie, but seeing the transformation with Phantom has been fun to watch. She’s really playful with him which he loves as he’s an inquisitive and playful horse. Of course, there is one issue with Munchkin working with Phantom. Dixie gets a bit jealous that she’s not receiving all of Munchkin’s attention which means she tends to follow them all over the arena trying to get Munchkin’s attention. Now…

Phantom’s Training: Backing Up and Yielding Forequarters

Posted in Family

We were thrilled to have Daddy home with us a couple of weeks ago which meant that we not only tackled a few projects that needed to get done, but we also put some good time into training the horses. On Sunday, Daddy and Munchkin worked with getting the horses comfortable with going in and out of the horse trailer as they had an appointment with the vet on Monday night. Thankfully, the prep work ahead of time worked out as they both did well not only loading and unloading but also with getting their blood drawn for their Coggins…

Dixie Horse Training: Desensitizing to Rope

Posted in Family

Upon bringing the horses home, we realized that we were going to need to start at the very beginning to make sure their were no holes in their training. They both are hot horses and need some serious groundwork and desensitizing. For the past few days, Munchkin has be faithfully working on desensitizing Dixie to the rope. She throws the rope over and around all parts of her body until it no longer phases her. As you can see in the pictures, this part of the desensitizing doesn’t really phase her. In fact, there are times where it looks like…

Horse Training: No More Flops

Posted in Family, and Outdoor Adventures

After a couple of weeks of training with Phantom, today was the day that I would finally attempt to sit on his back. (Notice, I did not say ride – yet – as we needed to see how he would react to me being on his back.) I’d already been working on getting him to line up with where I would mount him using more than one location, and he was at a point where he was listening well for that. We had taken walks in several locations to see how he was with different surroundings as I wanted to…
