Managing Manure by Mark Kopecky

Special thanks to Storey Publishing for providing a review copy of this book. This post may contain affiliate links. If you have animals, you have manure. If you have horses or other large livestock, then you have tons of manure. According to the book, two horses (like we have) would produce, on average, 18 tons of manure a year. Given how much manure we clean up daily, I have no doubt that this stat is spot on. In Managing Manure, Mark Kopecky talks about the properties of different types of manure as well as a variety of ways to handle…

Country Girl at Heart

Posted in Family

While I pretty much grew up in the city, I’ve always been a country girl at heart. It could have something to do with the fact that I also grew up going fishing and camping. Exploring the great outdoors and learning how to use a gun from a young age was also part of my upbringing. It should be no surprise that I ended up dating and marrying a farm boy even if he did end up taking on the title of U.S. Marine. We’ve traveled the countryside as the Marine Corps sent us from one location to the next.…

My New Dehydrator

Posted in Homemaking, and Homesteading

I was so excited when I was finally able to order a dehydrator as it’s something that I’ve been wanting for several years. Thanks to saving up Amazon gift cards (some from my Swagbucks* search as well as some that I’ve received for special occasions), I ordered the dehydrator a little over a week ago. Now, I could dehydrate the food that we couldn’t get to before it went bad. Yes, freezing works well for many foods, but the idea of being able to store food without the freezer and in a smaller space was definitely a draw for me.…

My Birthday at the Homestead

Except for the sunset, these pictures were all taken prior to purchase of the cabin. The dogs were enjoying the cooler weather and the open spaces to run. Wiley quickly learned that if he listened and came when called that he didn’t have to be tied up or on a leash. His recall was wonderful. Wyatt, on the other hand, got so sidetracked by everything that he didn’t listen well. He found himself on leash a good bit of the time. We’re going to need to do some serious recall work with him so he can enjoy a bit more…

Visiting the Homestead

Posted in Family, and Homesteading

Except for the sunset, these are all pictures from when we were at the house prior to purchase. On Monday, we waited on pins and needles to see if the mortgage company would release the funding so we could close escrow. We didn’t want to pack up the trailer with things for the cabin if we wouldn’t be heading up there until later in the week. (At this point, we knew that we were definitely closing escrow, so it was just a matter of when it would happen.) As soon as we received word that the funding had gone through…
