10 Tips for a Greener, Cleaner Home Part 1

Posted in Gluten Free, Homemaking, and Thrifty Ideas

Our journey towards having a greener household all started when we went gluten free a few years ago.  Having to look at the ingredients on everything (not just food) really opens your eyes to what is in various products.  Our switch to eating gluten free helped us transition into a healthier and more organic diet.  In turn, this lead to us paying more attention to how different products made us feel. We transitioned from traditional cleaning products with toxic fumes that gave us headaches to more kid-friendly, non-toxic cleaning products.  While we were doing this, we had to constantly be…

Truck Update

Posted in Thoughts, and Thrifty Ideas

On Tuesday evening, D got back the instrument panel for the Suburban.  After Munchkin’s baseball practice, he reinstalled it in the Suburban.  It was working nicely.  Then, something crazy happened when he put the dash panel back in place.  The truck died!!  It wouldn’t start. He tried charging the battery, and it still wouldn’t start.  It was really, really odd.  We finally popped the dash panel off, and the truck started!  It was really strange. My truck is in pieces

A few months ago, the speedometer on my Suburban went out.  It was a gradual process.  At first, there was a click, click sound.  Then, it started to get stuck at certain speeds.  Finally, it just stopped working.  We took it over to the Chevy dealership, and they confirmed that it was the cluster motor.  They said they would have to replace the whole instrument panel.  The parts alone would cost somewhere in the range of $500-600.  That figure didn’t include labor. **sigh** When we went home, D hopped on the internet to do some research.  It turns out that…

Eating gluten free can get pricey if we buy all of the pre-packaged items. I save money by making things from scratch and buying in bulk. Today, we picked up our first order from Azure Standard. Here’s what we received: 5 lbs of brown rice flour25 lbs of brown basmati rice25 lbs of brown short grain rice(8) 44 oz bags of gluten free oats32 oz bag of flaxseed meal25 lbs of dried whole corn We’ll store the large quantities in food grade buckets that I scored for $1 each at the Walmart bakery. From what I hear, you can sometimes…

Organic & Gluten Free Bargains

Posted in Family, and Thrifty Ideas

When we first arrived here, we decided to look around to see what was in the area. We checked out what stores were available and where they were located. On our way to check out something (I can’t remember what at this point in time), we saw this run down looking building that was labeled discount grocery store. We decided to check it out even though it didn’t look that great. My first impression was not good, but as we began to look around, we started finding lots of goodies. You had to really look through everything, but good deals…
