Trying to Stay Cool in Arizona

Posted in Family

Frozen Grapes

I admit it. I took air conditioning for granted while we lived on base. Here at the cabin, we don’t have air conditioning. Nope, we have a evap cooler (aka swamp cooler) that can cool the main part of the house, but it doesn’t work in the bedrooms. It also doesn’t work that great on humid days, but at least it cools things off on those hot, dry days. We didn’t even have that for the first week that we were up here as it hadn’t been repaired yet, so I’m grateful for it even if it doesn’t work as well as a/c. 😉

We’ve mainly been relying on the ceiling fans and 2 tower fans in the bedrooms. Thankfully, at night it cools down, so we can open up the windows. Basically, we’re going old school on trying to keep the house cooler. It’s been some time since I’ve been without a/c, so I’m learning all over again what works and what doesn’t work.

During the hottest times of day, we tend to just relax and drink lots of water. We eat cool treats like frozen grapes. If we get too hot, we’ll put an ice pack on our necks for a little while to help us cool down.

The dogs have been resting a lot more during the day, but they still like to go outside an play. They tend to stick to more shady spots when possible.

Since monsoon season has started, we have had a little rain which has resulted in humidity going up. We’re not complaining though because the rain is dearly needed here as all the wildfires show.

If you have tips for staying cool in the heat without air conditioning, share away! 🙂

One thing my husband and I do when it is muggy and our swamp cooler does not want to keep us cool is turn it on to pump and put a fan in front of it. You can then take a heavy towel and soak it in water. Lightly ring it out but it still has water in it. and place over front of fan. It will keep you really cool.

    Heather:

Another thing my husbands grandmother did was to set up wet towels in front of windows and across the door’s of the house. If you have a fan in a window that would be great also. I know how you feel about the heat because I live in the dessert of New Mexico and we get some high heat here. I can’t use Air Conditioning because somehow I am allergic to it. My husband has to put curtain’s over the door to my office even with the swamp cooler. I can’t see having them die of heat because I can’t stand it myself. ;0)
    Hope this helps some.
