A Matter of TrustA Matter of Trust Book Details:

When life is murder, who can you trust?

One minute Mia Quinn is in her basement, chatting on the phone with a colleague at the prosecutor’s office. The next minute there’s a gunshot over the line, and Mia listens in horror as her colleague and friend Colleen bleeds to death.

Mia’s a natural for heading up the murder investigation, but these days she has all she can do to hold her life together. As a new widow with a pile of debts, a troubled teenaged son, and a four-year-old who wakes up screaming at night, she needs more time with her family, not less—and working Colleen’s case will be especially demanding. But Colleen was her friend, and she needs to keep her job. So she reluctantly teams up with detective Charlie Carlson to investigate Colleen’s death. But the deeper they dig, the more complications unfold—even the unsettling possibility that someone may be coming after her.

My Thoughts:

A Matter of Trust comes out swinging and the intensity doesn’t stop throughout the entire book. Mia finds herself as a single mom after the death of her husband. When her best friend is murdered while she is talking to on the phone, Mia feels like her world is spiraling out of control. Her boss puts her on the case to prosecute the murderer of her best friend when they catch him, but this means more time away from home. Her teenage son is tired of babysitting his younger sister and helping out around the house, so he’s acting out which increases the tension in the home. Mia doesn’t know if she can handle everything on her plate, but she has to try.

Charlie, the cop on the case with Mia, has some darkness in his past that is being brought to light by their other case – a cyber and physical bullying case that lead to the suicide of a teen boy. As they work both cases, surprises turn up left and right and take them in expected directions. When Gabe, Mia’s son, gets involved in a bad situation, Mia begins to wonder if she’s a horrible parent and if she’s doing the right thing for her family, but she knows she needs to keep going if she’s going to support her kids. Through it all, she finds herself seeing a different side of her Dad as he gently gives her guidance and support.

The twists throughout the book – all the way to the end – keep the reading guessing and engaged. The characters are relatable; their stories and emotions are real. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more in the series.
