Munchkin’s Truck: Welding and Grinding

I realized that it’s been some time since I’ve updated the progress on Munchkin’s truck project. There is a reason for that… At this point, things are moving pretty slow as it takes a lot of time, patience, and work for this part of the project. They’re working on removing rust, patching (welding in new sheet metal), shaping the new pieces, grinding down the welds to make a smooth surface…. You get the idea. When you throw in the summer desert heat, well, things move even slower. Munchkin isn’t doing any welding, but she does help with the rust removal. Right now, she’s not overly motivated to work on the truck. She says we need an air conditioned workshop. I can’t blame her as it’s hard to want to be outside working when the temps are 110+. lol!

Even though the actual work is moving slow, they continue to plan the next steps of the project. We routinely receive parts catalogs to browse for the “right” parts for the truck. Munchkin is trying to find a good balance between price and style. It’s a good experience as it’s helping her see the value of money. She’s earning a little money here and there as well as saving money that she receives as gifts. Daddy gives to suggestions and advice on products, but because it’s her money (and her truck), she’s the one who ultimately makes the decisions on the purchases. She’s currently trying to decide which gauges to get for the truck. It might sound like an easy decision, but it’s not. She’s trying to decide if she wants a classic look or a more modern look. She’s also determining which price range she wants to go with for the gauges. So many decisions….

When we’re out driving around, both Daddy and Munchkin are keeping an eye out for trucks. They talk about the lines of the truck, color, wheels, tires, and various parts of the truck. I can’t help but smile as I know that Daddy is loving this special time with her.

Daddy tapes various truck shows which they will watch together. Munchkin tends to get a bit bored if it doesn’t have anything to do with her truck, but if it’s something that might be useful for her truck, she perks right up. I’m impressed with what she’s picking up from listening to Daddy and watching the shows. She even has her own Hayes Repair Manual for her truck. **grin** Daddy is also learning a lot as the truck project moves along. Yes, he works on vehicles all the time, but this process is new to him. He’s been swapping advice with some guys at work as he knows more about certain things while they know more about others. It’s nice to have that knowledge pool to draw from.
