Exploring Williams, Az – Day One

Exploring Williams Arizona - Dog Town Lake

We decided that we needed to take a little break from our normal routine, so a camping trip was planned. We needed to head away from our immediate area as it was just too hot to be camping here – especially dry camping which is our norm for our area. Originally, we were just going to head out for the Memorial Day long weekend, but we were unable to get into a campground. Our plans changed…

Exploring Williams Arizona - Daddy's 1st Ride on the KTM Dirt Bike

Since D had a new-to-him dual sport KTM, he wanted to be able to test it out. We decided that we’d head up to Williams, Az.  For those who aren’t familiar with the area, Williams is near the Grand Canyon. There are many places to explore and lots of outdoor activities in which to participate. Because Williams is at a higher altitude, the temperatures are much cooler here than in our part of Arizona. In fact, the night temperatures have been in the 30s. We found out that our first night here was the beginning of the above freezing temps at night.

Our first day here, we decided to head out a check out two different fishing areas. Our first stop?  Kaibab Lake.  It’s a beautiful small lake that is near our campground in Kaibab National Forest.  After we did a brief exploration of that area, we needed to fill up our gas tanks and pick up a map of the area at the ranger’s station.  We also went ahead and picked up our free National Park pass while we were here.

Our next stop was Dog Town Reservoir, we took our time and walked around a bit once we arrived. We were surprised to see crabs and what looked like crawfish. The area was beautiful even with the volcanic rock beaches. After our visit here, we knew it was time for some food and a short break. It’s been some time since D has ridden a dirt bike, so he was feeling it. I was ready for a break and some hydration.

Later that evening, we headed back over to Kaibab Lake so Munchkin could do a little fishing. This time, the dogs joined us for our excursion.  They could not stand still as they just wanted to explore which meant Daddy and I were walking around while Munchkin fished. All too soon, at least according to Munchkin, the fishing time was over. She decided that she needed to do a bit more research into what lures were needed for fish in this area since live bait is not allowed. She hopes to have better luck in future endeavors during this trip.

We had a great first day and look forward to seeing what other adventures this trip holds. Up next – Exploring Williams Day Two.
