Review: Big Book of History (Timeline)

Big Book of HistoryColors in this image are slightly off due to lighting issues.

The Big Book of History is a huge timeline (15-feet to be precise) that starts with the literal 24-hour days of creation and ends in 2010 with President Obama declaring that the U.S. is no longer a Christian nation.

The timeline book can be used like a book (just turn the timeline pages), or it can be unfolded to reveal history right before your eyes.  (It’s also available in a panel-only version where you can hang it on the wall.)  The sturdy, full-color pages feature a timeline where history is color coded according to:

  • Bibilical/Christianity
  • World Events
  • Inventions/Technology
  • Civilizations/Empires

Throughout the timeline, you will find little “Did You Know” tidbits highlighting interesting trivia facts.  Because this is a Christian timeline, you will find a good number of Biblical facts and highlights regarding items of interest to Christians.  Remember how I said the timeline concludes with President Obama’s declaration that the U.S. is no longer a Christian nation?  Well, the end of the timeline features an interesting sequence from the time in 1947 where President Truman declared the U.S. a Christian nation to how we got to our current situation as “no longer a Christian nation”.  The sequence includes removing prayer from schools, removing the Bible from schools, and the Ten Commandments being removed from public buildings.

Munchkin thinks this is a very nice timeline. She appreciates that it doesn’t contain evolutionary ideas, and that the timeline lines up with Biblical history. She also appreciates that it doesn’t have a cutesy “fake” Noah’s ark. She did say that the Jonah graphic was a little odd. Overall, she really likes this timeline as well as the colorful graphics and pictures used in it. The only thing that could have made it better was if they would have replaced the few cartoonish graphics with more realistic ones. (There were very few of these. It was enough that she wanted it mentioned, but not enough that she feels that it detracts from the book.) She and Daddy had a good time studying the timeline together.

  3. Hi Heather,

This was a great review. We are studying history on a continuum as well, starting with Creation and eventually working our way up to the present. One question for you: What was the approximate date this book gives for Creation?

    Thanks!
