Princess and the Popstar: A Story of Trading Places

~A Lesson in Being Yourself~

Mark Twain’s The Prince and the Pauper is reborn in true VeggieTales style with the Princess and the Popstar.  Princess Poppyseed is a farm girl who is tired of her life and her siblings.  She dreams of being a famous singer like her idol – Vanna Banana.  Vanna Banana wants to have a real family and friends.  The popstar life has left her feeling lonely.  During a chance meeting on the playground, Princess and Vanna hatch a plan to switch places and live each other’s lives.

Through a series of different events, the girls both learn that the grass is not always greener on the other side of the fence.  They also learn that God has a plan for each of them.  He gave them exactly what they needed to be uniquely themselves.  They learn to love who they are and the circumstances in which they are currently placed.

The interlude features the new silly song – Astonishing Wigs.

Bonus Features include:

  • Behind the Music of Princess and the Popstar
  • Astonishing Wigs Sing-a-long
  • Right Where I Belong Sing-a-long
  • Points for Being Uniquely You
  • Studio Commentary

The dvd features both widescreen and fullscreen versions.  Subtitles include Spanish and English. (Note: this trailer does contain spoilers.)

Our thoughts:

Vanna Banana is obviously a play on Hannah Montana which was a bit amusing.  Princess and the Popstar is a feel-good, kids movie with a good, solid message.  So many girls struggle with self-esteem and self-worth, so it’s important for them to know that God loves them and made them the way they are for a reason.  The musical score and songs for the story were good.

The bonus features were lacking a little.  We would have liked to have seen at least a game or two that tied into the story.

Overall, it’s another fun VeggieTales movie that will be enjoyed by VeggieTale fans young and old.
