The Great Shark Rescue

Project 365 – #076

Last week, every day seemed to hold a new adventure.  Yes, we enjoyed walking the beaches and collecting various shells, but we also enjoyed being able to see rays, fish, and other sea creatures in the water.  A couple of mornings, we found sand dollars on the beach.  All of these things were fun, but our biggest adventure began with a simple walk on the beach….

Picking up a shell

Munchkin let out a squeal when she saw something on the beach.  She went running over and discovered that a shark had been beached when the tide went out.  At first, we thought it was dead, but as soon as we realized that it wasn’t, I snapped a quick picture, threw off my shoes, and tried to get it back in the water.

Shark

It was quite the interesting process as I had to first try to get water flowing over the gills, so it could get oxygen into its system.  Munchkin kept shouting out things to do.  I kept working at keeping it upright while trying not to get bit.  You’d think the shark would have been grateful for the help, but no, it just kept trying to bite.  Crazy shark.  Or, maybe I’m a little crazy. lol!  Finally, the shark was able to stay upright, but it was still pretty sluggish.  Honestly, we didn’t think it was going to make it.  Munchkin decided to take off her shoes, so she could check it out a little more.  By the time that she got over there (only a few moments later), the shark had taken off.

Seaweed

We thought it was pretty exciting that we received the opportunity to rescue a beached shark – definitely not an every day occurrence.
