Grades 6-8

Editor in Chief by Critical Thinking Press is an excellent resource to help students become better writers and self editors.  Students learn how to identify and correct grammatical errors, writing mechanics errors, and usage errors.  They have to really think while they are reading the short stories as not all errors jump up from the page.

We received the B1 level of Editor in Chief which is geared towards students in grades 6-8.  For the first few stories, I walked through the process with Munchkin.  Grammar and writing are not her strongest subjects, so she needed a bit of guidance.  Soon, she was able to find the errors, but she still struggled a bit with identifying why the different errors were incorrect.  I’m thinking that we may want to go back one level for her.

Both Munchkin and I like Editor in Chief as a learning tool.  When she saw that it comes in a computer version, she decided that she may enjoy that a little more.  (She enjoys instant feedback on her work.  Plus, the computer version gives hints if needed.)

Editor in Chief B1 has 33 different stories/exercises.  The answer key goes over each of the errors and explains why they are errors.  Students will use the Guide to Grammar, Usage, and Punctuation at the end of the book to help them edit each of the stories.  It’s a great supplement to our current homeschool curriculum.

As a member of Timberdoodle’s Blogger Review Team I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a frank and unbiased review.

  1. We also did this review and I completely missed that they have a computer version, Doh! We did the upper level C and I am thinking it was a little more of some grammar we are not familiar with yet for my son. If you ever want to part with this let me know because I think my son really is liking it.
