Knights of Arrethtrae 4-6

The Knights of Arrethtrae is a series written by Chuck Black.  Chuck Black is known for his Kingdom series.  In both series, readers travel back to a time of knights, chivalry, castles, and sword fights.  The lack of magic, wizards, and graphic violence is notable.  These allegories span from Genesis all the way to the second coming of Christ.  In the Knights of Arrethtrae series, readers enter into the lives of specific knights who are fighting for their Prince.  These stand alone books take place between books 3 and 5 of the Kingdom series.

Lady Carliss

Lady Carliss and the Waters of Moorue

Lady Carliss, a veteran Knight of the Prince, has proven herself to be a master with both the sword and the bow.  As she is returning home from her latest mission, she finds herself engulfed in a perilous adventure to find the kidnapped family of her friend.  During their search, Lady Carliss is briefly reunited with a dear old friend, Sir Dalton, only moments before he is attacked by a mysterious, poisonous creature.  Lady Carliss is faced with the horrible decision of whether to continue to search for her friend’s family or search for an antidote for Sir Dalton.  Along the way, Carliss realizes that she is soon going to be faced with a horrible decision — save Sir Dalton or let him die so others may live.  What will she decide?  Will her faith and devotion for the Prince hold strong?  Will fear overcome her as she faces the evil Shadow Warriors and struggles to make the right choice?

Sir Quinlan

Sir Quinlan and the Swords of Valor

Twitch and Tav were best friends.  They enjoyed training together.  Twitch always knew that Tav was going to be a great Knight as he had all of the skills necessary to become great.  When Tav’s uncle, Sir Baylor comes to town, no one really expected that it would be Twitch who would be recruited into the Prince’s special band of knights, the Swords of Valor.  Twitch is dubbed Sir Quinlan even though he doesn’t quite feel that he is up to the task at hand.  When tragedy strikes the Swords of Valor, Twitch heads back to his former life and figures it’s all over, but the Prince has other things in mind for this young knight.  After receiving special training, he is given a very special mission.  Will he be able to bring the Swords of Valor back together?  Will he be able to overcome his past to achieve the Prince’s objectives?

Sir Rowan

Sir Rowan and the Camerian Conquest

Sir Rowan is enjoying life as a decorated tournament knight in Cameria when he receives some strange warnings from a mysterious stranger to stop fighting in the the tournaments.  Unfortunately, Sir Rowan doesn’t heed the warnings, and he ends up being attacked and left for dead.  An interesting woman comes to his aid and nurses him back to health.  Recovery is slow and painful, but Sir Rowan strives to become more independent.  A scary return to his old home brings with it the realization that things are not as they were prior to his attack.  The world is a different, more dangerous place.  A few of his countrymen have decided that they need to take back their land from the evil that has befallen it.  Will Rowan decide to help these men?  Will he discover his true purpose in the Prince’s kingdom?  Will he embrace his true identity and accept the mission set before him?

Munchkin’s thoughts:

I don’t want to put these books down.  At first, I didn’t want to read them because the covers on the books didn’t interest me, but my mom decided to read the first book to me while I wasn’t feeling well.  I quickly was drawn into the story and couldn’t wait to hear what happened next.  We read Lady Carliss in one day.  The next day, my mom read me Sir Quinlan.  I asked her to start reading Sir Rowan, but she didn’t feel up to reading out loud any more that day.  I asked her if I could start reading that book on my own.  Thankfully, she said yes.  I really enjoyed all of the action and adventure in these books.  I like that they are all about Jesus and Christians.  These books will be great for kids of all ages and even adults.  I’ve already had my Grandma read one of the books because I like them so much.

My thoughts:

Knights of Arrethtrae is a well-written series of books.  In fact, after reading the last 3 books in this series, I ordered not only the first 3 books in the series, but also the Kingdom series for Munchkin.  She was extremely excited when I first surprised her with the Knights of Arrethtrae series and then later, the Kingdom series.

The Biblical story is woven seamlessly into the fabric of the knight’s stories.  Readers see the Biblical truths being lived through the lives of the brave Knights of Arrethtrae.  Because there is no magic or wizardry, parents can feel comfortable allowing their children to read the books.  While fierce battles and sword fights take place in the books (as our battles with Satan are truly fierce), there isn’t any gory violence.  Parents can feel confident that their kids will become engaged in the story telling and walk away learning Biblical truth.

Each book is available individually for $9.99, or you can receive a discounted price when you purchase the books in sets.

I received a copy of these books from Waterbrook Multnomah as a member of MamaBuzz to help facilitate the writing of this frank and honest review. All opinions are my own.
