Portable PatriotThe Portable Patriot: Document, Speeches, and Sermons that Compose the American Soul
Edited by Joel J. Miller & Kristen Parrish

Book Description:

Too often reduced to a mythic set of lofty ideals, the soul of America is far more than a concept-it is a people. Even the most sacred principles mean very little unless lived out passionately by an informed citizenry.

In The Portable Patriot, you’ll find a carefully assembled sampling of American history’s most formative words, written by the people who were making that extraordinary history.

Speeches and sermons, essays and extracts, poems and proclamations illumine such values as independence, virtue, humility, thrift, prayer, and reliance on God. While peering back to the cradle of America’s national identity, The Portable Patriot also points a way forward, compelling us to heed poet John Dickenson’s plea to “rouse your bold hearts at fair Liberty’s call.”

About the Editors:

Joel J. Miller is the author of two previous books, Bad Trip and Size Matters. His writing has been featured in The American Spectator, Reason, and elsewhere. He lives in Nashville, Tennessee, with his wife and two children.

Kristen Parrish has a passion for history and for the written word. She earned her BA in History from Texas A&M University and works as an editor-in-chief. She and her husband, Marc, reside with their three teenagers and assorted cats in Franklin, Tennessee.

My Thoughts:

Somewhere along the way, our great nation has lost the vision of our Founding Fathers.  We’ve lost sight of what was important to those men who fought long and hard to establish a foundation for a solid government based on morals and Godly values.  Part of the problem is that many people do not even know what is actually in documents such as the Bill of Rights and Constitution.  They have no understanding of the mindset and thoughts of the Founding Fathers and those who built this nation from the ground up.  They do not know our nation’s history.

It’s hard to really learn from past mistakes if you don’t know or understand the past.  The Portable Patriot has an array of selections from famous people in our nation’s history as well as selections from important documents such as the Constitution of the U.S.  These selections give us a glimpse into our past and the great minds of some of those who have gone before us.

I have only made a small dent into all of the readings in this book.  Some of the selections are ones that I have never read.  Both D and myself are thoroughly enjoying this book.  I will be using it in our homeschool as I believe that Munchkin can greatly benefit from reading this collection of documents, speeches, and sermons.

We are doomed to fail if we do not learn from our past….

I received this book as a member of Book Sneeze in exchange for an honest review. No other compensation was received. All opinions are my own. This post contains an amazon affiliate link.
