Constitution Unit Study

ConstitutionMunchkin is learning about United States History and United States Government this year in school.  This week, she’s finishing up with the overview of American Government.  Starting next week, we will begin the more in-depth look into the founding of our nation and the structure of our government.  The first thing we will be doing is a month long unit study on the United States Constitution.

I was thrilled to see that Homeschool Resource of the Day is having a constitution theme week, so I’ll be gathering up those free resources as they are posted on their website.  In addition, they posted a bonus constitution resource on their sister site – Homeschool Radio Shows.

We will be using the Constitution lapbook from Hands of a Child.

Another resource that I plan on using is A More Perfect Union: America Becomes a Nation.  This resource was originally created as part of Constitution Week.  The two-hour movie dramatizes the events of the Constitutional Convention of 1787.  It’s divided into segments for easier use in the classroom.  A free downloadable teacher’s guide is available for use with the dvd.  The teacher’s guide contains printable activities for students.

I’ll be adding some worksheets and reading comprehension pages from abcteach for review.

We’ll be reading various books from the library in addition to using The Portable Patriot (review coming soon).  I’m still working on our book list for the unit.

Once we complete the unit, we’ll assemble everything into a nice book about the Constitution.

If you have any recommended resources, I would appreciate you sharing!  :)
