Mixes from the Heartland Review

Mixes from the Heartland

Mixes from the Heartland

Mixes from the Heartland specializes in natural, gluten-free, freeze dried meals.  They have a dedicated gluten-free facility, so there is no need to be concerned with cross contamination issues.  They are also very careful with their suppliers as they want to supply safe, healthy gluten-free meals to their consumers.

We were given the opportunity to try out several different mixes.

Gluten Free Apple Cinnamon Pancake Mix: This mix smelled delicious, but we ran into several problems. D mixed it up per the directions and ended up with an odd mixture.  It was very thick and jiggly.  It did not pour like a regular pancake mix.  Unfortunately, that wasn’t the end of the problems.  The pancakes would not cook through.  I decided to try to bake the pancake batter to salvage it, but it would not cook through even in the oven.  I do not know if we got a bad mix or what, but we can not recommend this particular mix.  $6.49

Texas Sausage-N-Bean Soup: This mix called for ground beef or sausage, beef stock, and crushed tomatoes.  Since I normally use ground turkey, I chose to use ground turkey.  I also used chicken stock instead of beef stock.  The flavor on the finished dish was good, but it would have been much better had I used the sausage.  It just needed that extra punch of heat/flavor.  I like this mix because I was able to put it all in the crockpot and have an easy meal several hours later.  $6.99

Mexican Style Casserole Meal: This mix calls for ground beef and salsa.  Once again, I chose to use ground turkey.  This meal was absolutely delicious.  It was our favorite of the mixes.  It was filled with flavor.  We topped ours with a little cheese and sour cream.  Munchkin liked it, but felt it was a little too spicy for her.  D and I didn’t mind as it was more for us.  We highly recommend this mix.  $6.49

Raspberry Pound Cake: I don’t believe any of us have ever had raspberry pound cake, so we were looking forward to trying this mix.  The cake itself is a dense, raspberry colored cake.  It recommended frosting with chocolate frosting, so I whipped up some chocolate buttercream frosting.  Munchkin thought the cake was okay, but it wasn’t a favorite. Both D and I enjoyed the cake.  It’s not something that I would want on a regular basis, but it would be nice to have every now and then.  $6.49

Mixes from the Heartland has many, many gluten free mixes, so make sure you stop by and see all they have to offer.

I received some sample mixes to try for the purpose of this review. No other compensation was received. All opinions are my own.
