Homeschool Happenings…

Posted in Homeschooling

We are currently learning about John Adams (as in the 2nd President of the United States). It’s been interesting to find out that he was very concerned about doing what was right no matter what the popular opinion was at that time. He stood against the popular opinion of going to war with France and sought peace. He was able to eventually get the peace with France that he desired. It made us think about how many times we back down from our own opinions just because everyone else thinks differently. Ultimately, it really doesn’t matter what others think as long as we’re listening to God and what he wants us to do.

For grammar, we’re working on pronouns. While munchkin is grasping the concepts (object, subject, possessive pronoun), D just has a puzzled look on his face. Munchkin loves that she knows something that Daddy doesn’t.

I’ve been using movies & books for compare & contrast type things. We’ll read the book and then watch the movie that goes along with the book. Or read a passage in scripture and then read a Bible story or watch the movie version. We try to pick out the differences and talk about how just omitting a few things can change how you view the whole story/movie. Little details really do make a difference. I’ve been impressed with some of the things that munchkin picks up that I do not. She makes me think. We’re also doing reading comprehension type exercises.

Math is mainly multiplication these days. Not munchkin’s favorite, but we’re working through it. She’s also working on solving for “n”. This concept seems to be a little easier at least at this point in time.

Her favorite subject is science. She loves learning about animals and nature. If she had her choice, we’d be doing science experiments all of the time. Right now, we’re focusing a bit more on history than science. As the weather changes, we’ll be doing more experiments and focusing more on science.

We’re still working our way through Joshua. It’s taking a bit longer than planned, but I’d rather take our time than go too fast.

Home economics is an area that I feel very strongly about. I feel it’s very important for munchkin to have all the skill necessary to run a successful home someday. We’re having fun learning how to cook and bake different meals. She’s learning simple skills like un-loading the dishwasher, vacuuming, dusting, and organizing. We’re working a bit on sewing as well. We were trying to learn how to knit, but that’s been put on hold for now.

Munchkin wants to be done with the school year by the time that Daddy is done with his school. We’ll see if that happens. Right now, we’re about a week behind schedule (due to illness), but that shouldn’t be a problem. The main thing is to make sure she is learning and enjoying learning. Not every day is easy, but I want her to love learning overall. Life is constant learning. If you stop learning, you might as well be dead.

Yes, once a Marine always a Marine. The Marine Corps is truly an extended family for us. Thanks for taking the time to comment. 🙂
